The Hoxton Hotel in LA is All Things Modern Retro

Los Angeles, California

I can’t help it- I’m a sucker when it comes to a hotel with good design. And if it’s modern retro? Even better. I was in LA and was looking for a hotel for the last night of my stay when I saw The Hoxton Hotel pop up on my phone. I was shocked that I hadn’t seen it the other days I was in town. As I was checking-in, I was told it was their third day being open!

When I arrived, the diner, café, and lobby were bustling and full of people. The atmosphere was incredibly inspirational and I couldn’t believe the hotel had only been open for such a short time. Some people were working on their laptops, others chatting in groups, having a drink, and snacking. The vibe was amazing and hearing The Buzzcocks in the playlist was shocking to me. Heck yes.

I want to share my experience at The Hoxton and how in one day it became one of my favorite hotels in LA. The Hoxton is full of beautiful retro-inspired designs, from the décor to the furniture. And the staff were so friendly, too. This hotel really made my trip.

I can’t express how amazing my experience at The Hoxton was!

The cafe and diner by the lobby have a very welcoming vibe. As you can see, the décor is very vintage-inspired, and that’s probably why I just wanted to bust out my laptop and get some work done then and there! I have never taken my laptop to the lobby of a hotel. Nope. I’ve never felt comfortable having it out in public and getting some work done because it felt weird. It’s the lobby. It’s not a working space. But here at The Hoxton, I felt completely comfortable coming down from my room and working in the lobby, the diner, or the cafe. It was honestly somewhat of a feeling of relief. I don’t have to work in my room for once- I can enjoy the décor and soak up the vibes in this awesome, motivating space with lots of other people.

But, honestly, even in the room I felt so inspired and comfortable! After a while working in your hotel room it can get very isolated, but I didn’t feel that at all in the room I was in here. There’s something about the decor that just made me feel like I was at home and not just some hotel.

Somehow, The Hoxton has combined all of the things I need when I travel into one place. It’s out of the ordinary, yet homely at the same time. Yes please and thank you!

The Room

Where do I even start? The decorations were absolutely gorgeous and you can tell they put some thought into it. It was special; modern retro décor that you don’t get in many hotels. It wasn’t just your basic pen and paper next to the phone either, the room came with a “Survival Guide” which gave you a fun layout of everything the hotel has to offer. Seriously, I was reading it and it sounded like someone was having a real-life conversation with me! They’re witty and it made me giggle a few times. I appreciated that a lot. My experience with some hotels tends to be pretty cut and dry and a little bit of cute humor made me feel happy staying there. The hotel experience is an extremely important part of travel- it’s important to feel at home. The room also came with a little map showing you some local spots to check out in the area, AND the best part, it came with a “breakfast bag” which you fill out and hang outside your door, and they bring you a few breakfast snacks in the morning! SHUT.UP.

Here are the main things I loved about The Hoxton.

  • The Lobby/Cafe/Diner area is all connected and it has a very social vibe. There were people socializing and working, it’s a great combo! That by far was probably my favorite part. I felt very comfortable working by the cafe and that’s a really rare feeling when traveling and staying at hotels for me.

  • The survival guide and little map were a nice touch! Even though I’ve been to LA many times, it’s nice to have a few recommendations around the area and makes your stay feel a little more personal.

  • Breakfast in bed?! Yes, please! The little breakfast bag came with orange juice, apple, and a granola bar and they put it right on your door! So, no need to go down to the lobby in your PJ’s and messy hair to grab breakfast. Hopefully, this might be the future of hotel breakfasts! But, if you want more food you can head down to the cafe that’s right in the restaurant and grab some breakfast. Oh, if you like breakfast as much as I do, you can eat breakfast all day. I had the breakfast sandwich around 10 pm and it was delicoussssss!

  • Another highlight of my stay was the bed and sheets. They have now made my top 5 list of my most comfortable hotel beds list. It felt like I was sleeping on clouds.

  • The lobby playlist is bomb. I can now say I’ve heard The Buzzcocks and Zombies in a hotel which is just another reason to love The Hoxton.

  • The aesthetic, vibe, and design are on point. The retro-modern décor is totally to my taste, and my stay was an unforgettable experience. No basic hotel vibes at all!

Know before you go

  • A few other guests mentioned that they had one bedroom and that it was way too small for them. I stayed in a two-bedroom and the size was decent so if you prefer larger rooms, request a double bedroom.

  • They park the cars in a parking garage a few streets down, so getting the car from the valet took a while. Be sure to call for your car ahead of time. It’s also worth noting that they do charge for valet.

  • The hotel can hold your bags before your check-in time in case you get there early. But be sure to grab your bags before you go up to your room when it’s ready! I forgot mine and had to come back down due to the excitement of checking out the room!
