Vintage Americana: Staying in a Wigwam Motel on Route 66

đź“ŤHolbrook, Arizona.

If you’re passing through Holbrook, and you love to experience things that are out of the ordinary, you must stay in a wigwam motel. The place you sleep whilst on the road is an exciting way to bring more to your travel experience as a whole- and what better than staying in a wigwam?

I’m not going to lie, I didn’t know wigwam motels were a thing when we drove by this. As usual, we weren’t planning on stopping any time soon but because I can’t pass up a great photo opportunity, we did. Who could miss out on photographing such a unique place with such gorgeous retro cars parked outside? (Anyone a “CARS” movie fan? I’m sure you’ll quickly notice “Mater” in the photos below. Cute little prop!)

When I walked inside the lobby and asked about rates for the night- it was pretty affordable! I don’t remember exactly but it was about $70 a night- more than worth it for a unique retro travel experience. They only had one room left, so I booked it! It was meant to be. The room was too cute with traditional tiles, rattan furniture, and Navajo-style soft furnishings. I’ve shared some pictures below.

If you plan on visiting, there are more than just the wigwams in the area! Around the corner, there are some dinosaur statues in front of a warehouse. I think they make them there. Another cute photo op! When you arrive, be aware that there aren’t many food options after 7 pm. I didn’t take any photos but we went to this western-style restaurant. We had steak and red wine and everyone was super friendly. Look out for the cowboy silhouettes on the windows, you can’t miss it.

Overall, our stay was great! The perfect way to experience something different on the road. The motel definitely has its vintage vibe. Don’t expect anything fancy, it’s back to basics at this retro motel. No bathroom amenities, no phone, a 1990’s TV, and no ice machine. It really is like going back in time and experiencing that retro lifestyle. But, you will be relieved to know that there is an air conditioner! An essential when traveling in Arizona.
